Tips To Keep Your Children’s Teeth Healthy

When it comes to children and health, usually the teeth are the most prone to neglect. Children, often times, eat many sugary foods which actually contributes to early tooth decay. To avoid this, it is very important to take care of your children’s teeth as if they were your own.

How you should help your child maintain healthy teeth

  • Introduce early brushing- As early as when the child is toothless, start brushing the gum. There are a lot of soft baby brushes which can be bought. Using a fluoridated paste, brush the child’s teeth twice a day. Make sure the brushing is gentle otherwise you could end up hurting the child’s gums. It is important to teach and get your children in the habit of brushing properly as soon as possible. This way, tooth decay can be easily avoided.

  • Watch the snacks children eat- Some snacks, especially those with a lot of sugar, can be harmful to your children. It is important that they are not allowed to eat sweets all the time. Sugary snacks should not be eaten every day. Junk food and fast foods are both high contributors to tooth decay and should be given only in moderation.

  • Make visits to the dentist- Children’s teeth are very sensitive, and at times it’s hard to distinguish when something is wrong. Making consultations with a dentist is highly recommended for early detection and preventions.

It is the responsibility of the parent to help children maintain healthy teeth. Following the suggestions above will bring you joy to see a healthy smile from your child with healthy teeth. Tips for Brushing Your Teeth

Often times we overlook the importance of brushing your teeth. Are you using the right technique? Do you have the right tooth brush? You need to make sure you don't get lazy while brushing your teeth and follow these tips to keep your mouth healthy and clean.

  • Brushing your teeth three times a day is best. It is best to brush your teeth three times a day for at least two minutes to clean  any plaque and bacteria buildups in your mouth.

  • Make Sure To Change Your Toothbrush. After your toothbrush bristles lose their flexibility, it's time to throw your toothbrush away. At Michael R. Mullen D.D.S., we recommend you change your toothbrush every three to four months to maintain the quality of your brush.

  • Focus On Both Sides Of Teeth. Most people just brush the outer part of your teeth; yet, the inter part is just as important. Next time your brush your teeth, try brushing the inside part of your teeth and your mouth will feel more clean.

  • Must Brush Properly. Make sure you are brushing softly up and down vertically and not across your teeth horizontally. By not brushing correctly  you risk your mouth getting abrasions and not cleaning all the plaque and bacteria within your mouth.

Hope these couple of tips help you the next time you brush your teeth. Make sure to keep your teeth clean and strong for optimal health. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment with our dentist Michael R. Mullen D.D.S. please feel free to call (915) 593-1900
